It’s all Cedric’s fault. We met in a hotel in Essen, in 2008 – two people from Portal and three people from IELLO, and discussed our publishing plans. I told them about a game I wanted to design – I told them about Stronghold. It was October 2008, the very beginning of my work on that game. I spoke about the huge numbers of troops, about hordes of skeletons and orcs storming the castle.

In 51st State there are four different factions available for players. Every faction has its own Contact Cards which are used to bring cards into the game. These cards differ and this difference is very important at the beginning of the game – Mutants are weak at Deals, and Merchants are weak at Building. Players have to work very hard to get rid of this starting disadvantages, they need to develop theirs State so it can omit faction’s disadvantages. The faster you do it, the better.

There was that moment when 51 run smooth and I was able to show it to people from outside our office. I brought the game to my friend, we played. “It’s ok”, he said. “But this lack of interaction…” “You can’t have interaction here. It is a civ building game. Not war game.” I started to explain. “Yes, I know, but still. You know, it is a Neuroshima card game. You should bring interaction.”, he was unsatisfied. This is a part of awesome project by Edrache. You’ve probably heard already about his great series of game posters. I hope you will enjoy it as well!

This short series of articles will not present all the rules of the game. You won’t be able to sit and play 51st State after you finish reading the last installment of the series. It will, however, show you the fundamental mechanisms of the game and show you what is important in 51st State. Today I want to tell you about Resources and how I used them to make players make decisions.

Big Daddy Creations has finished work on addaptation of Neroshima HEX for Iphone/Ipod/Ipad! The game has been sent to AppStore. If the game is accepted, it will be released in a few days! We have it already on our Iphone and Ipad and we love it. Big Daddy did an awesome work. Here is the trailer showing NS HEX in action!

Last week I showed you three ways of bringing a card into play – you can Invade it, you can have a Deal with it or you can Attach it to your State. In a fact there is a forth way of bringing the card into a play. It is called Redevelopment and is a very important action. You develop your State, you change old Locations into new ones.
